History of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences
The Division of Humanities and Social Sciences was established during the 1992-1993 academic year. The departments of English, History, Economics, Language Studies, and Political Science came under the Division. It replaced the Division of English and History, established in 1970 when the Naval Academy restructured the curriculum to implement a majors program. The Division of English and History had subsumed the Department of English, History, and Government that had been formed in 1937 through the merger of the Department of Economics and Government with the Department of English and History (each of which can trace their lineage to earlier departments, such as the Department of Ethics and English Studies and the Department of English Studies, History, and Law).
