Little is known of Wilhelm Schmidt, other than that, in 1848, he was a resident of Traventhal in the modern day German state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Schleswig-Holst: Kriegslieder, Volk- u. Gesellschaftslieder, Geschrieben zur Unterhaltung von Wilhelm Schmidt, comprising a single volume of 28 leaves of text, was written in 1848. The volume, the full title of which roughly translates to Schleswig-Holstein: War Songs, Folk Songs, and Social Songs, Written for the Entertainment of Wilhelm Schmidt, was presumably written by Wilhelm Schmidt of Traventhal in 1848 during the time of the German Revolutions of 1848-1849.
Schleswig-Holst: Kriegslieder, Volk- u. Gesellschaftslieder consists of transcriptions of German poems and songs, including some by noted German authors. Included among the volume's works are "An die Deutschen Frauen," "Die Lorelei" by Heinrich Heine, "Trampfeslied," "Jägerlied" by Herman Kiefer, "Kriegers Abschied" by Albert Methfessel, "Des Minnesängers Heiligthum," "Der Schiffer," "Der gute Kamerad," "Der Troubadour," "In der Ferne," "Die Fahnenwacht," "Das Bild der Rose," "Der Blummenstrauss," "Soldaten Lied," "Burschen Lied," "Ein Lied für Volk," "Der Zigeunerknabe im Norden," "Geständnis im Liebe," and "Gedicht."
