  • Abstract: Edward Robert Herbert, Jr. was an enlisted submariner in the United States Navy during World War II. The Edward R. Herbert, Jr. Papers span from 1944 to 2005. The papers are the product of Edward R. Herbert, Jr.'s duty as a submariner aboard U.S.S. Flying Fish during World War II, as well as his membership in the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II and the U.S.S. Flying Fish Association after the war.

Biography of Edward R. Herbert, Jr.

Edward Robert Herbert, Jr. was born on October 13, 1924 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Living in Stratford, New Jersey with his wife, Evelyn Herbert at the start of World War II, Herbert enlisted in the United States Navy at Camden, New Jersey on March 2, 1943. On July 20, 1944 he reported aboard U.S.S. Flying Fish (Submarine: SS-229), where he served as a Fireman First Class (Motor Machinist's Mate) in the engineering department. Edward R. Herbert, Jr. died on August 17, 2005 and was interred at Berlin Cemetery in Berlin, New Jersey.

Description of Contents

The Edward R. Herbert, Jr. Papers, comprising 0.13 linear feet of documentation, span from 1944 to 2005. The papers are the product of Edward R. Herbert, Jr.'s duty as a submariner aboard U.S.S. Flying Fish during World War II, as well as his membership in the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II and the U.S.S. Flying Fish Association after the war.

Included in the collection are certificates, photographs, clippings, newsletters, historical sketches, and ephemera.

The Edward R. Herbert Papers are arranged in alphabetical order by document type into a single series with no subdivisions. The papers are entirely the product of Herbert's association with U.S.S. Flying Fish and his identity as a submariner in World War II. Much of the collection focuses on Herbert's post-war reunion activities, such as his membership in the Submarine Veterans of World War II and gatherings of the U.S.S. Flying Fish Association from 1991 until his death. The remainder of the collection pertains to the history of U.S.S. Flying Fish, including her war record and participation in various Navy Day celebrations.
