Biography of Richard S. West, Jr.
Richard Sedgewick West, Jr., naval historian and professor in the English, History, and Government Department of the United States Naval Academy, was born in Nashville, Tennessee on June 30, 1902. In 1925, West graduated with a B.A. from Vanderbilt University, followed by an M.S. from Yale University in 1928.
Prior to joining the U.S. Naval Academy faculty as an instructor on July 6, 1928, West was employed as an Instructor in English from 1926 to 1927 at the Mississippi State College for Women. At the Naval Academy, Professor West served as course chairman for such subjects as World History, Modern European History, and Composition and Literature. During the 1960s, he was a leader in Academy curricular changes.
A national recognized authority on naval history and the history of the Civil War, Professor West was the author of The Second Admiral; A Live of David Dixon Porter, 1813-1891 (1937), Gideon Welles, Lincoln's Navy Department (1943), Admirals of American Empire: The Combined Story of George Dewey, Alfred Thayer Mahan, Winfield Scott Schley, and William Thomas Sampson (1948), Mr. Lincoln's Navy (1957), and Lincoln's Scapegoat General; A Life of Benjamin f. Butler, 1818-1893 (1965).
Professor West was the co-author of American Sea Power Since 1775 (1947), which was used as a textbook at the Naval Academy. He also published numerous journal articles and book review. West lectured widely on his specialties and was a member of such scholarly organizations as the American Historical Association, the Modern Languages Association, Phi Beta Kappa, the Civil War Roundtable, and the Naval Historical Foundation.
Richard West was principal of the West Tutorial School of Annapolis, of which his wife, Marie, was headmistress. Mr. and Mrs. West were also noted painters of sailing vessels and nautical subjects.
Professor West had planned to retire from teaching at the end of the Spring 1968 semester, but died suddenly at his home on February 14, 1968. He was survived by his wife, Marie, and son, Charlie.

Description of Contents
The Richard S. West Papers, comprising 11.26 linear feet of documentation, span primarily from 1935 to 1965, with several historical documents, and facsimiles thereof, dating as far back as 1861. The papers focus primarily on West's writings, research, teaching, and lectures on the subjects of the Civil War and American naval history.
Over three-quarters of the West Papers pertain to West's authorship of books on naval history, the naval history of the Civil War, and roles and lives of David Dixon Porter, Gideon Welles, and Benjamin Franklin Butler. The documentation covers much of the process of the authorship of West's books, including his research, the drafting of manuscripts, the securing of copyright permissions, the gathering of potential illustrations and maps, and the collection of royalties following publication. To a far lesser extent, the papers also cover West's writing of book reviews, newspaper articles, journal articles, and historical dictionary entries.
Much of the remainder of the collection pertains to West's teaching at the Naval Academy and lecturing to other organizations. Documentation of West's teaching activities include the notes he used in class or in preparing for lectures, printed maps used as teaching aids, and class handouts. West's teaching and lecture materials focus on naval history, as well as European history, American diplomacy, and geopolitics.
