- Abstract: The records of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1919 focus primarily on the biographies of individual class members and on the activities, such as reunion events and the production of class publications, of the class as a whole.
History of the Class of 1919
In the summer of 1915, 267 plebes were admitted to the United States Naval Academy, comprising the Class of 1919. The Class of 1919's time on the Yard was a time of expansion and reorganization for the student body, with the reorganization of the Brigade into the four battalion, twelve company Regiment of Midshipmen in 1915. 1916 saw the number of appointees for each Senator, Representative, and Delegate increase to three, followed by another increase to four in 1917. The physical development of the Yard also continued with the completion of Griffin Hall in 1918. Perhaps of greatest impact to the Class of 1919 was the April 6, 1917 declaration of war on Germany, which would ultimately result in the Class' early graduation. The Class of 1919 graduated on June 6, 1918, commissioning 199 new officers.

The records of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1919, comprising 2.92 linear feet of documentation, span from 1934 to 1980. The papers focus primarily on the biographies of individual class members and on the activities, such as reunion events and the production of class publications, of the class as a whole.
The collection is composed of letters, questionnaires, press clippings, photographs, publications, and notes.
Over half of the collection is held within Series 1: Biographical Files, which consists of individual biographical files for each class member. The remainder of the collection, found in Series 2: General Files, focuses on the Class of 1919's reunions, publications, gifts, financial records, and other related activities.

Series 1: Biographical Files, 1934-1974 Boxes 1-5
Series DescriptionBiographical material on individual members of the Class of 1919, primarily used in the production of the Class' 30th and 45th anniversary publications. Included in the series are biographical data questionnaires, incoming and outgoing letters, press clippings, obituaries, photographs, resumes, class publication submissions, and miscellaneous publications such as newsletters and annual reports. Many of the files also include correspondence from and questionnaires filled out by deceased class members' widows.

In addition to the documentation of the Class' activities, the series contains several files on military pay, the Naval Historical Foundation, and the Texas Voters for Enforcing the Constitution.
