A veteran of the Spanish American War, Bloch was awarded the Specially Meritorious Medal of the Spanish War. After the Spanish American War, Bloch served as a member of the China Relief Expedition during the Boxer Rebellion (1900). Bloch also held significant commands within the battleship forces and commanded navy yards and districts. He served as Judge Advocate General and as a General Board member. Admiral Bloch initially retired from the U.S. Navy in 1942, but was recalled to active duty during the Second World War with a final retirement in 1946. Admiral Claude C.
