- Abstract: Claude C. Bloch was an admiral in the United States Navy and a member of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1899. The Claude C. Bloch Orders span the period of 1904 through 1940 and consist of official U.S. Navy orders and notifications to Bloch spanning most of his career.
Biography of Claude C. Bloch
Admiral Claude Charles Bloch born 12 July 1878 in Woodbury, Kentucky, was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1899, who served as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Fleet (1938-1940). A veteran of the Spanish American War, Bloch was awarded the Specially Meritorious Medal of the Spanish War. After the Spanish American War, Bloch served as a member of the China Relief Expedition during the Boxer Rebellion (1900). During the First World War, he commanded a troop transport, earning him the Navy Cross. During peacetime, Bloch held various ordnance-related posts, culminating with Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance. Bloch also held significant commands within the battleship forces and commanded navy yards and districts. He served as Judge Advocate General and as a General Board member. Admiral Bloch initially retired from the U.S. Navy in 1942, but was recalled to active duty during the Second World War with a final retirement in 1946. Admiral Claude C. Bloch died 4 October 1967 and was interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
