Description of Contents
The William P. Lawrence Papers, comprising 20.27 linear feet of documentation, span over one hundred years, but focus primarily on Lawrence's life, from 1930 until shortly before his death in 2005. The papers describe various events and aspects of Lawrence's naval career and personal life, including his studies as a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy; career as an aviator and officer in the United States Navy; experiences as a prisoner of war in Vietnam; tour as Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy; and affiliations with the National Football Foundation and National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The collection is composed of various document types, including personal and official correspondence in the form of letters, memoranda, and telegrams; press clippings, speeches; draft and published articles; reports and transcripts; event programs; certificates and plaques; artwork; memorabilia; photographs; and a DVD.
The Lawrence Papers are organized into twelve series by document type and office of origin. Three series are based on office of origin, and focus primarily on Lawrence's career in the United States Navy. Lawrence's various roles with the United States Naval Academy are documented in UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY FILES, with separate subseries for his roles as a midshipman, alumnus, Superintendent, and Chair in Naval Leadership. Much of the remainder of Lawrence's naval career, including his tours as Commander of the U.S. Third Fleet, Chief of Naval Personnel, and Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Manpower, Personnel and Training), is documented in UNITED STATES NAVY FILES. However, all textual documents pertaining to Lawrence's captivity as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, including correspondence, press clippings, speeches, reports, as well as a POW bracelet, are found in PRISONER OF WAR FILES.
The remaining series are based on document type, and encompass Lawrence's professional and personal lives. General biographical material pertaining to Lawrence, his family, and his ancestors is housed within the three subseries of BIOGRAPHICAL AND GENEALOGICAL FILES. Many of Lawrence's views on the challenges facing the U.S. Navy can be found in WRITINGS AND SPEECHES (GENERAL), which contains magazine articles and speeches written by Lawrence, as well as interviews of Lawrence. The series also includes several poems written by Lawrence, such as "Oh Tennessee, My Tennessee." PRESS CLIPPINGS, divided into two subseries, supplements many of the other series in providing details of Lawrence's professional achievements and personal opinions. Evidence of many of Lawrence's speaking engagements and awards, and as well as professional and recreational affiliations, is housed among the material in EVENT PROGRAMS. PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE contains letters between Lawrence and his family, as well as such notables as Vice Admiral James Stockdale and Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander. Many of Lawrence's personal and professional interests, such as the role of women in the Navy, changes in the commissioning of reserve officers, and Lawrence's lifelong ties to his home state of Tennessee, are described in SUBJECT FILES AND PERSONAL MISCELLANY. This series is also home to material pertaining to Lawrence's activities after retirement, and his primary and high school educations. CERTIFICATES AND PLAQUES contains three of Lawrence's U.S. Navy commissions, as well as several minor awards. In addition to coverage in earlier series, Lawrence's naval career, Naval Academy affiliations, personal life, and family history are highlighted throughout PHOTOGRAPHS. This series is also home to portraits of Lawrence, his family, and other noted naval personnel, politicians, and athletes. Finally, ARTWORK AND MEMORABILIA contains several mementos and reproductions of paintings.
Research interests served by the Lawrence Papers include the personal history and opinions of William P. Lawrence, the history of the Lawrence and Brewer families, U.S. Navy personnel issues since 1980, the role of women in the Navy and Naval Academy, and the experiences of prisoners of war during the Vietnam War.
