Description of Contents
The Edward L. Beach Papers, comprising 16.26 linear feet of documentation, span from 1883 to 2000, with a majority of the material falling between 1951 and 1999. The papers are the product of Beach's careers as a United States Navy submarine officer, novelist, historian, lecturer, and political aide.
The collection is composed primarily of incoming and outgoing correspondence, with lesser amounts of photographs, news clippings, brochures, newsletters, event programs, transcripts, notes, certificates, and photocopies of published works.
The Beach Papers are organized into five records series by topical coverage. The first two series, Series 1: General Files (Chronological) and Series 2: General Files (Alphabetical) offer the widest breadth of coverage of Beach's life and career. Combined, the two series cover Beach's post-World War II U.S. Navy service, his authoring of historical and fictional works, his relationships with other historians and authors, his involvement in Republican Party politics, his teaching at the Naval War College, his work with the United States Naval Institute, and Beach family history. While the two series do touch upon Beach's service in the Navy, they, and the collection as a whole, contain little in the way of official documents from Beach's U.S. Navy career.
The next two series focus on specific projects and areas of personal interest to Beach. Series 3: U.S.S. Memphis Files focuses on Beach's work pertaining to the U.S.S. Memphis (Armored cruiser : CA-10), which was wrecked in 1916 in the waters off Santo Domingo while under the command of Beach's father, Edward L. Beach, Sr. More specifically, the series deals with Beach's affiliation with the Memphis Survivors Association, efforts to rehabilitate the reputation of his father, and writing of Wreck of the Memphis. Series 4: Admiral Kimmel Files pertains to Beach's efforts to have Admiral Husband E. Kimmel's full rank posthumously restored and his authoring of Scapegoats: A Defense of Kimmel and Short at Pearl Harbor. To that end, the series includes research materials on the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, correspondence with United States Senators and Defense Department officials, and materials pertaining to others' writings on Kimmel and Pearl Harbor.
The final series, Series 5: Cruise, Lecture, and Public Appearance Files, is the product of Beach's work as a guest lecturer and his role as the guest of honor at various commemorations and special events. Much of the lecture documentation in the series represents Beach's work specifically as a cultural and historical lecturer aboard the Ocean Pearl and the ships of Royal Viking Tours.
Noticeably absent from the collection are drafts and research materials for Beach's books, aside from the contents of Series 3: U.S.S. Memphis Files and Series 4: Admiral Kimmel Files. Other than fan mail, reviews, and licensing materials, there is minimal documentation pertaining to Submarine!, Run Silent, Run Deep, Around the World Submerged: The Voyage of the Triton, Dust on the Sea, Cold is the Sea, or The United States Navy: 200 Years.
