Description of Contents
The Thomas B. Buell Papers, comprising 11.34 linear feet of documentation, span Buell's careers as both a United States Navy officer and a historian from 1953 to 2002, with some documentation dating back as far as 1862. The papers record various aspects of Buell's life and career, including his studies at the United States Naval Academy and Naval War College, his tour of duty as a commanding officer of a frigate, his role as an educator in the United States Navy, and his research and writings as a naval biographer and military historian.
The collection is composed primarily of textual documents, such as personal and official correspondence, orders, press clippings, journal articles, handwritten notes, draft manuscripts, event programs, pamphlets, and brochures. Non-textual documents include photographs, maps, and audio recordings. The collection also includes several floppy disks.
The Thomas B. Buell Papers are organized into five series by topic, document type, and occupation. The first three series are almost exclusively the product of Buell's career as an officer in the United States Navy. Series 1: Personal Correspondence, consisting overwhelmingly of correspondence between Buell and his parents, spans from his time as a Midshipman at the Naval Academy through his retirement from the Navy in 1979, with additional letters from his preparatory school experiences leading up to his Naval Academy admission. Additional documentation pertaining to Buell's admission to the Naval Academy, as well as his specific studies and training activities, appear in Series 2: United States Naval Academy Files. Series 3: United States Navy Files covers Buell's naval career from shortly after his Academy graduation through his retirement in 1979. While spanning his entire career, the series focuses primarily on Buell's time as a faculty member at the Naval War College and United States Military Academy, as well as his command of U.S.S. Joseph Hewes (Fast frigate : FF-1079). The series also touches upon Buell's brief service in the United States Navy Reserve prior to his admission to the United States Naval Academy.
The remaining two series span beyond Buell's Navy career. Series 4: Writings and Research focuses on Buell's writings, including journal articles, speeches, and monographs, while an officer in the Navy and as a historian following his retirement from naval service. While the series includes drafts and publication copies of Buell's various articles, it is limited to research material only with regard to Buell's book-length histories and biographies. Series 5: Subject Files and Personal Miscellany contains material pertaining to Buell's personal interests, business dealings, and other topics not touched upon elsewhere in the collection, such as family history and early education.

Subseries 4f: Sea Warrior Trilogy, 1862-2002

The materials pertain to such topics as the career of Rear Admiral Donald J. MacDonald, U.S.S. O'Bannon in the Battle of Guadalcanal, and U.S.S. Monitor and her role in the Battle of Hampton Roads. The subseries includes correspondence, notes, contracts, invoices, photocopies of research materials, and photographs.
