History of the Class of 1940

In the summer of 1936, the 711 incoming plebes of the Class of 1940 were admitted to the United States Naval Academy, marking the entrance of the last Academy class to complete the full four-year course of instruction before classes were accelerated due to World War II. Studying under the leadership of Superintendents David F. Sellers and Wilson Brown, the Class of 1940 was witness to the completion of Melville Hall, Leahy Hall, and the Naval Academy Museum, as well as the new nave of the Naval Academy Chapel. Other notable events on the Yard during the Class of 1940's four years include the Naval Academy's first intercollegiate sailing race in 1936 and the penning of Chaplain William N. Thomas' "Prayer of a Midshipman." On June 6, 1940, 456 members of the Class of 1940 graduated and were commissioned in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Of the 456 midshipmen who graduated, 49 were ultimately lost to combat action in World War II.

Description of Contents

The records of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1940, comprising 11.47 linear feet of documentation, span from the Class' admission to the Naval Academy in 1936 until 2010. The records focus primarily on the biographies of individual class members, especially members' service in World War II and, to a lesser extent, the Korean War and the peacetime Navy.

The collection is composed of typed reminiscences, correspondence, photographs, battle reports, orders, diaries, and ephemera.

The Records of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1940 are organized into two series by document type and topical coverage. Series 1: Biographical Files consists of individual biographical files for approximately twenty-five percent of the Class' graduate and non-graduate members. Consisting largely of typewritten reminiscences, the files also include, in some cases, personal paper materials. Series 2: General Files pertains largely to class reunions and other similar events, as well as class gifts and the administration of the Class of 1940 Archive project.

Series 1: Biographical Files, 1936-2010 Boxes 1-17, 20[OS]-22[OS]

Series Description

Documentation pertaining to the Navy careers, Naval Academy experiences, and personal lives of individual members of the Class of 1940 (both graduate and non-graduate). The files were accumulated as part of the Class of 1940 Archive, originally administered by Naval Academy history professor Robert Love, and consist primarily of responses to assignments by Professor Love prompting class members for their career service histories, impressions of time as a midshipman, impressions on the peacetime Navy prior to December 7, 1941, impressions of/duty assignment at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, impressions of service in World War II by year, inventories of personal papers of historical significance, impressions of the Korean War, impressions of the Peacetime Navy from 1945-1970, and impressions of technology.

In addition to their responses to the Archive assignments, some members of the class contributed portions of their personal papers to their biographical files, including battle reports, diaries, personal correspondence, and military personnel files. Class members who contributed significant amounts of personal paper materials include Robert Harris, Raymond Hill, Raymond A. Hundevadt, Frederick Karch, Richard Laning, Arthur L. Maltby, Frederick Pennoyer, Ernest Peterson, John Refo, Paul S. Treitel, Warren Walker, Robert Weatherup, and Tom Henderson Wells.

Also included in the series are summaries of each class member's contributions and a subject index, both prepared by Professor Robert Love. An electronic copy of Love's alphabetical index is available online at http://cdm16099.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p16099coll5/id/7991
