History of the Class of 1923
In the summer of 1919, 657 incoming plebes of the Class of 1923 were admitted to the United States Naval Academy, marking the entry of the first class of plebes since the Armistice ending World War I. During their time on the Yard, the Class of 1923 was witness to the completion of Luce Hall in 1920 and the Zimmerman Bandstand in 1922. Studying under the leadership of Superintendents Edward W. Eberle, Archibald H. Scales, and Henry B. Wilson, the Class also saw the adoption of the Academy's first formal mission statement. On the athletics front, the Class of 1923's time on the Yard was marked by the resumption of the annual Army-Navy Football Game following a two-year hiatus, as well as the 1920 Navy Crew team's gold medal performance at the Antwerp Olympics. The Class of 1923 graduated 412 members on June 7, 1923.

Description of Contents
The United States Naval Academy Class of 1923 Records, comprising 6.21 linear feet of documentation, span from the Class of 1923's admission to the Naval Academy in 1919 until 1996. The records focus on the biographies of individual class members, the reunion and regional activities of the class, and on longtime class president, Admiral Arleigh Burke.
The collection is primarily composed of obituaries, press clippings, photographs, correspondence, notes, publications, rosters, event programs, ephemera and memorabilia.
The records of the Class of 1923 are organized into five records series by topical coverage. Series 1: Biographical and Obituary Files consists of individual files for 188 graduate and non-graduate members of the Class. Compiled largely for the purpose of writing obituaries, many of the files include photographs of the class members. Series 2: Reunion Files consists of photographic and published documentation of the Class of 1923's 5-year reunion activities. Information on smaller, regional reunions, as well as regional bulletins, can be found in Series 3: Regional Chapter Files. Other materials pertaining to the Class of 1923 as whole, including the administration thereof, are housed in Series 4: Subject and Administrative Files. These materials also include photographs and ephemera from the Class of 1923's time as midshipmen at the Naval Academy. Series 5: Arleigh Burke Files is devoted entirely to biographical material on Arleigh Burke and the construction, launching, and commissioning of U.S.S. Arleigh Burke (Guided missile destroyer: DDG-51).
