Biography of Edward B. Sutterley

Edward B. Sutterley was a Chief Pharmacist's Mate in the United States Navy who served aboard U.S.S. Ticonderoga (Aircraft carrier: CV-14) during World War II until her decommissioning at Bremerton following Operation Magic Carpet.

The Edward B. Sutterley U.S.S. Ticonderoga Kamikaze Attack Collection, comprising 1.42 linear feet of documentation, spans from 1945 to 1998, with a bulk of the material produced in 1994 and 1996. The collection focuses solely on the kamikaze attacks suffered by the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ticonderoga on January 21, 1945 during operations against the islands of southern Japan in the final year of World War II.

The collection includes reminiscences, correspondence, audio cassettes, and photocopies.

The Edward B. Sutterley U.S.S. Ticonderoga Kamikaze Attack Collection is arranged alphabetically by document or binder title in a single records series. The collection consists of Sutterley's edited collection of recollections of the kamikaze attacks on U.S.S. Ticonderoga entitled Kamikaze Attack: U.S.S. Ticonderoga (CV-14) 21 January 1945, as well as the source material used by Sutterley in its creation. The source material, contained in binders entitled "Original Letters of Legacy," is composed primarily of correspondence and written recollections solicited by Sutterley from Ticonderoga's officers and enlisted crew members, as well as from their widows and surviving family members. These materials also include occasional copies of diaries, audio recordings, and other materials contemporary to the 1945 attacks on Ticonderoga. Also included in the collection is a photocopy of a 1945 cruise book entitled U.S.S. Ticonderoga War Log.
