Biography of Neville T. Kirk
Born in Leeds, England on July 20, 1908, Neville Thomas Kirk immigrated to the United States at the age of five. Receiving both a bachelor's and master's degree from Columbia University, Kirk initially taught at Columbia University and Pleasantville High School. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he received a commission in the U.S. Navy and was attached to the Naval Reserve Officers School at the Naval Academy, where he taught history. Following three years at West Point with the inaugural instructor exchange program, Kirk returned to the Naval Academy as a civilian professor in the Department of English, History, and Government in 1948. Kirk remained with the Naval Academy until his retirement and subsequent appointment as Professor Emeritus in 1976. Neville Kirk continued to reside in the Annapolis area, serving on the Lower Broadneck Federation of Community Associations until his death on October 21, 1988.
Neville Kirk was the author of, coauthor of, or contributor to The Governments of the Major Foreign Powers (1945), Naval Academy Readings in the History of Sea Power (1970-1973), and Bluejacket: An Autobiography (1986). Kirk also served as an editor for the United States Naval Institute.

Description of Contents
The Neville T. Kirk Papers, comprising 16.47 linear feet of documentation, span from 1828 to 1988, with a bulk of the material commencing after 1870 and ceasing in 1985. The papers are largely the product of Kirk's tenure as a professor in the Naval Academy's Department of English, History, and Government, and are composed of visual materials used by Kirk in the classroom, as well as other teaching aids and documentation of the operations of the Department of English, History, and Government and Kirk's activities therein.
Included in the collection are photographic prints, glass plate negatives, lantern slides, and 35mm slides, clippings, magazine articles, event programs, letters, memos, newsletters, invitations, maps, pamphlets, certificates, photographs, and scrapbooks.
The Kirk Papers are organized into two series by document type. Series 1: General Files includes various material types largely related to Kirk's tenure as a Naval Academy professor, including materials pertaining to the operation of the Department of English, History, and Government, teaching materials, and Academy publications. Series 2: Photographs and Negatives is composed of photographic prints, glass negatives, and slides, most of which were presumably used as visual aids in the classroom. Overwhelmingly the product of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the images within Series 2 focus on the United States Naval Academy, the Spanish-American War era Navy, and naval portraiture.
