Description of Contents

The Robert L. Grove Scrapbook, comprising 0.21 linear feet of documentation in a single volume, spans from 1920 to 1923. The scrapbook, constructed from a 1923 edition of the Lucky Bag yearbook, focuses primarily on the 1923 midshipman summer practice cruise and 1923 June Week activities.

The Robert L. Grove Scrapbook focuses on two primary topics: the 1923 Summer Practice Cruise and 1923 June Week. Documents pertaining to the 1923 summer practice cruise include: photographs of ports of call, including Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Cadiz, Gothenburg, and Gibraltar; photographs of the officers of and activities aboard U.S.S. Delaware and U.S.S. North Dakota, including coaling; a menu and schedule from U.S.S. North Dakota; and various European postage stamps and hotel stickers. Photographs pertaining to 1923 June Week include images of the Prizes and Awards ceremony, sham battles, the Class of 1923 jumping into the Severn after graduation, the Plebe Snake Dance, and a formal parade.

Towards the end of the scrapbook is a selection of documents pertaining to Robert Grove's application to the Academy and, presumably, his family. These documents include official correspondence regarding his application and nomination, as well as photographs, presumably of family and friends.

Other photographs in the scrapbook include portraits of Grove aboard a sub-chaser, aboard submarine U.S.S. S-10, and across the Naval Academy grounds; Naval Academy buildings and grounds, including Bancroft Hall, Santee Basin, and the band stand. The scrapbook also includes several newspaper clippings, pertaining to such topics as President Harding's transcontinental tour, Superintendent Wilson's attempts to alleviate midshipman debt, and the 1922 Army-Navy Game drinking scandal.
