Description of Contents

The Journal of a Cruise in the United States Frigate Hudson in the Years 1828-29-30 by W. M. Moore, comprising 0.06 linear feet of material in a single volume, was created in approximately 1828. Despite its title, the volume consists solely of handwritten rules for celestial navigation.

William M. A. Moore's journal consists of over one dozen rules for making navigational computations. As titled by Moore, the rules include: "Rule for finding Latitude by a Meridian altitude of the Sun"; "Latitude by a Meridian altitude of a Star"; "Latitude by the Polar Star"; "Latitude by an altitude Taken near noon"; "Latitude by double altitudes"; "To Find the Latitude within a very few minutes of noon"; "To find the Variation by the True and Magnetic Amptitudes"; "To Find the Variation by an Azimuth"; "To find the Latitude by the Moon"; "Time by an observed altitude of the Sun"; "Time by an artificial Horizon"; "Preparation for Working Time"; "To find the Time of high Water"; "Find the Longitude by Chronometer"; "Rule for Lunar Observation"; "Latitude by an altitude of the Moon"; and "To Compute altitude of the Sun, Moon, or Star."

Inside the front and back cover are various notes and calculations, as well as several iterations of Moore's signature and a sketch entitled "Tremont House, Galveston."
