Biography of Edward B. Garrigues

Edward Briggs Garrigues, Jr. was born on August 24, 1901 in Camden, New Jersey. After attending Camden High School and Wildwood High School, Garrigues enlisted in the United States Navy during World War I, attaining the rank of Quartermaster, Third Class. On June 24, 1921, he was admitted to the United States Naval Academy as a member of the Class of 1925, but resigned from the Academy the following year, on October 23, 1922.

After leaving the Naval Academy, Garrigues enrolled in Franklin & Marshall College, graduating with the Class of 1925. While at Franklin & Marshall, he starred on both the basketball and football teams. After college, Garrigues briefly played professional football for the Staten Island Stapletons, before taking a job as assistant basketball coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in 1934. In 1936, he assumed the head coach's position, remaining there until the eve of America's entrance into World War II.

In 1941, Garrigues received a commission in the United States Naval Reserve and was appointed Athletics Officer at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. In April of 1942, he was attached to U.S.S. Eagle 56 (Patrol craft: PE-56). Later that year, he was assigned to Local Defense training at the Naval Training School in Boston before assuming command of U.S.S. Leader (Patrol craft: PYc-42) in November 1942. Relieved of command in July 1943 for instruction at the Submarine Chaser Training Center in Miami and eventual duty with the Amphibious Training Command, Garrigues was ordered to LCI(L) Group Twenty-Seven in December 1943. In May 1945, he assumed command of LST Group Seven Flotilla Three, resupplying Okinawa. After the war, he was attached to LSM Squadron Five of the Service Force before detaching from active duty in July 1946.

After returning to civilian life, Garrigues returned to the field of education, taking a position as a teacher at Woodstown High School in Woodstown, New Jersey. In 1953, he received a Master's of Science in Education Administration from the University of Pennsylvania and by 1960 was serving as Principal in the Oldmans Township School District. Edward Briggs Garrigues died on June 1, 1999 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Description of Contents

The Edward B. Garrigues Scrapbook, comprising 1.42 linear feet of documentation, spans from 1909 to 1993, with the bulk of the contents having been created between 1920 and 1946. The scrapbook is largely the product of Garrigues studies at both the United States Naval Academy and Franklin & Marshall College, his career as a basketball coach, and his service as a Navy Reservist during World War II.

Included in the scrapbook are photographs, letters, postcards, clipping, certificates, tickets, transcripts, and orders.

The Edward B. Garrigues Scrapbook is roughly divided into five sections. The first, spanning 1920-1922, covers Garrigues' enlisted service in the U.S. Navy and time as a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. Topics depicted or discussed include battleship coaling operations, admission to the United States Naval Academy, views of Havana, Italian General Armando Diaz's review of the Brigade, the 1921 Navy Football and Basketball seasons, Masqueraders performances, boxing tournaments, the nomination of African-American Emile Treville Holley, the 1922 summer practice cruise from the Virgin Islands to Halifax aboard U.S.S. Florida, Navy wrestler Eddie Shaboo, and Garrigues' grades.

From roughly 1922 until 1925, the scrapbook covers Garrigues' time as a student-athlete at Franklin & Marshall College. Entries during this period pertain to Garrigues' participation in Franklin & Marshall athletics (especially football and basketball), Herbert Hartley's command of S.S. Leviathan, S.S. Southern Cross of the Munson Line, Franklin & Marshall athlete Don Cragin, and the suicide of John M. Longstreet of Collingswood.

Following the Franklin & Marshall entries, and spanning until 1938, the scrapbook pertains to Garrigues' professional football and high school coaching careers. Included are materials regarding Garrigues' experiences playing professional football for the Staten Island Stapletons, and his 1937-1938 tenure as head basketball coach for Wilson High School in Camden, New Jersey.

From 1941 through 1946, the scrapbook focuses on Garrigues' service in the U.S. Naval Reserves during World War II. These entries cover Garrigues' commission in the Naval Reserves to serve as an Athletics Officer at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, instruction in local defense at the Naval Training School in Boston, command of U.S.S. Leader, assignment to LCI (L) Group Twenty-Seven, command of LST Group Seven Flotilla Three, resupplying Okinawa operations, command of LSM Squadron Five in 1946, and demobilization later in 1946.

Following the wartime section, the scrapbook covers such topics as the inauguration of New Jersey Governor Alfred E. Driscoll, Garrigues' continued participation in the Naval Reserves based in Camden New Jersey, and Franklin & Marshall alumni activities. Also included at the end of the scrapbook are Garrigues' childhood report cards and clippings covering his participation in Camden High School athletics.

Filed separately from the scrapbook are several portraits of Garrigues, as well as a letter to Captain Eli Vinock in connection with Vinock's research on prior-enlisted midshipmen.
