Rugby Sevens

The Naval Academy Rugby Sevens Club is an athletic Extracurricular Activity (ECA) dedicated to fostering physical readiness, teamwork, and tactical decision-making under pressure through the Olympic discipline of rugby sevens.

Unlike traditional 15-a-side rugby, sevens is characterized by open-field running, rapid possession transitions, and intense seven-minute halves played across a full-sized pitch. The club focuses on:

  • Skill Development & Fundamentals: Teaching core ball handling, open-field tackling, evasive running, set pieces (scrums and lineouts), and spatial awareness to both experienced players and novices.

  • Conditioning & Resilience: Developing aerobic stamina, explosive speed, and mental toughness suited to high-cadence tournament play.

  • Brigade Camaraderie & Leadership: Reinforcing the Naval Academy’s mission of moral and mental development by instilling selflessness, mutual trust ("With You"), and sportsmanship.

  • Competition: Representing USNA in collegiate sevens invitationals, regional club matches, and development fixtures against civilian universities and service academy peers.

Whether competing on the pitch or supporting team operations, members gain valuable small-unit leadership experience, physical conditioning, and lifelong fellowship within the global rugby community. All Midshipmen in good standing with academic and conduct requirements are welcome to try out and train.
