Naval Academy Pipes and Drums Spring Concert

#032-15     ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Naval Academy Pipes and Drums will perform their spring concert, Pipes in Space, Friday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Mahan Hall at the academy. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature traditional pipe band pieces and contemporary space-related pieces. The Highland Dancers will perform a dance choreographed specially for the occasion as well as more traditional pieces.         

The Pipes and Drums, consists of bagpipers, highland drummers and highland dancers and is comprised entirely of midshipmen. The band was formed in 1996 through a generous endowment from the Naval Academy Class of 1961, and is the only active duty pipe band in the the Department of the Navy. The band can be seen in a variety of performances throughout the year in formal parades, noon meal formations, Celtic and renaissance festivals, and on the concert stage. Recent travels have taken them to the New York City Tartan Day Parade and the Southeast Florida Pipe Band Competition in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. where they were awarded First Place Overall, as well as First Place in Pipes and in Drums. Visitors may enter through Gate 3 (Maryland Avenue – recommended) or Gate 1 (at the intersection of King George Street and Randall Street) and will be required to show a picture ID.  All bags are subject to search. Vehicles without a Department of Defense or USNA credentialed driver or passenger are not permitted to drive onto the academy grounds. Visitors are encouraged to park at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and walk or ride public transportation to downtown Annapolis near the academy.  Authorized vehicles and vehicles with handicapped placards or license plates may enter through Gate 1 (King George Street) or Gate 8 (Maryland Route 450).  All bags and vehicles may be subject to search.
