Naval Academy Hosts Sixth Annual Capstone Day

POSTED ON: Monday, April 23, 2018 2:37 PM by Lt. Alexander Laun, USN

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — USNA will be hosting the sixth annual yard-wide Capstone Day Wednesday, April 25. Over 700 midshipmen and 175 faculty advisors will be participating in this day-long event. For the 1st Class (senior) midshipmen presenting their projects, Capstone Day represents a full year of brainstorming, teamwork, diligent research and late nights.

The breadth of capstone projects this year is truly amazing. Midshipmen from Engineering & Weapons Division have been investigating drone swarming behavior, counter-drone technology, unique ship designs, and sustainable aquaculture technologies for Haiti. Projects from the Math and Science Division include cutting-edge cyber security research, chemical warfare agent destruction processes, and even gypsy moth mortality. Aspiring young political scientists from the Humanities & Social Sciences Division have researched the meaning of modern democracy and nuclear deterrence policy.

At USNA, all 1st Class (senior) midshipmen are required to participate in a capstone project, representing the culmination of the undergraduate experience. Midshipmen form diverse, multi-disciplinary teams to investigate a variety of challenging and interesting topics.

“Capstone projects showcase the culmination of military and academic development that has gone into this next generation of naval officers. From what I have seen, they are prepared to take on the dynamic challenges they will face in the fleet,” said Capstone Day coordinator Lt. Cmdr. Crystine Good.

Over the span of the senior academic year, topic exploration may involve site visits, sponsor meetings, prototype fabrication, direct experimentation, and formal paper writing. A variety of federal and corporate sponsors support USNA Capstone Day, including Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman.

USNA Capstone Day will encompass all major academic buildings on the yard, and student posters will be displayed throughout the day in Alumni Hall. Formal Capstone team presentations will occur during the morning of the event.
