Featured Firstie

POSTED ON: Friday, April 3, 2020 9:22 AM by mediarelations@usna.edu

Today's Featured Firstie is 1/C Mary Machniak from San Diego, CA. Mary is majoring in Ocean Engineering and following in her parent’s footstep- both are senior engineers for NIWC Pacific.

Upon graduating, Mary will be heading to Panama City, Florida for the Joint Diving Officer Course to start her career as an EDO Diver before heading to Japan to check onto the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) as a Surface Warfare Officer. Mary is a member of the Navy Rock Climbing Team, Yoga, and Green Clubs.

Mary has also been a SAPR GUIDE for 3 years at the Academy and is serving as this year’s Brigade SAPR GUIDE Commander. The mission of the GUIDE program is to provide guidance, understanding, information, direction and education needed for individuals seeking support regarding incidents concerning equal opportunity, sexual harassment or sexual assault. DOD-wide, the month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) and is a pivotal time to show support for survivors, educate about consent, and raise visibility about services in our community.

Even though the Brigade is apart during this month, the GUIDEs and SHAPE Educators are working to create and continue a discussion regarding this year’s motto: “Respect, Protect, Empower.”
