Today’s Firstie Friday is MIDN 1/C Faith Brooks, a member of 20th Company and this semester’s Sexual Harassment and Assault Prevention Education (SHAPE) Commander. USNA’s SHAPE program empowers midshipmen to confront the issues of sexual assault and harassment and to have difficult conversations. Brooks is honored to be in charge of this program and uses her platform to help foster an environment of dignity and respect in the Brigade.
Brooks is from Bothell, Washington and is an Ocean Engineering major with a minor in Spanish. In addition to her involvement with USNA SHAPE, she is also a member of the Women’s Club Volleyball Team and VT-NA, an ECA for aspiring naval aviators. Her most memorable experiences as a midshipman have been studying abroad at the Portuguese Naval Academy last fall and riding backseat in an EA-18G on an aviation cruise.
Brooks has wanted to be a Navy pilot since she was eight years old and chose the Naval Academy because it was the only place where she could fulfill all of her aspirations: major in engineering, minor in a language, play a sport, study abroad, and participate in military training. “I knew that USNA would challenge me, but also that it would present opportunities that I wouldn’t get anywhere else.”
As the SHAPE Commander, Brooks and the rest of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Team at USNA are raising awareness for Domestic Violence Awareness Month by organizing multiple educational events throughout October.
