Today’s Firstie Friday is the President of the Midshipman Native American Heritage Club (NAHC): MIDN 1/C Celeste Duran. She is a member of 22nd Company from Santa Ana, Calif.
Duran is a computer engineering major and squad leader. In addition to her involvement with the USNA NAHC, Duran is a manager for Navy Women's Swim and Dive team and a member of the Midshipman Action Group, Society of American Military Engineers, and the Lucky Bag Yearbook.
Duran is the first in her family to attend college and join the military. She wanted to go to the Naval Academy partly as a role model for her two younger siblings. Her family also serves as inspiration for her leadership style at the Academy: “The greatest impact you can have on someone can be as simple as being kind, as you never know what others have gone through.”
Her favorite memory was spending time with her parents and brother, a Cadet at the Air Force Academy, when Navy Football played at Air Force this year. Duran tries to learn from everyone she meets and is inspired by the words of Socrates: “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” She will commission as a surface warfare officer in May.
