Today’s Firstie Friday is Midshipman 1st Class (senior) Kaitlyn Burns from Frederick, Maryland. She is a member of the 12th Company and the Third Battaltion Public Affairs Officer.
Burns is a goalkeeper for Navy Women's Soccer and a peer advisor for the team. Her favorite memory as a midshipman is the Patriot League Championship against Colgate in 2020. Navy Women's Soccer emerged victorious even after a rough season in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic: “It really took every single girl on the roster for us to succeed.”
Though soccer has played a large role during her time at the Academy, Burns chose the Academy because she wanted to attend a school where she could find purpose off the soccer field as well as on. Both of her parents served in the U.S. Army, so she was raised in a household that valued discipline and hard work. As a midshipman, she continues to embody the selfless nature of her family’s service, and strives to make a positive impact on every person she encounters.
Even with both of her parents serving in the Army, Burns ultimately chose the correct side of the Army-Navy Game rivalry. She will bring her positivity to the fleet when she commissions as a surface warfare officer in May.
