ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Professor Maria Schroeder was recently awarded the Naval Academy 2022 Civilian Faculty Service Excellence Award. Schroeder is the associate director of Midshipman Research (ADMR) at the Naval Academy and a faculty member in the Chemistry Department.
“Professor Schroeder’s effort in the past decade has truly contributed to the Naval Academy’s reputation as an institution of higher education,” said Dean of Research and Director of the Office of Research and Scholarship Reza Malek-Madani.
As ADMR, Schroeder manages all midshipman research programs including the Trident Scholar and Bowman Scholar programs. In 2012, she instituted the Midshipman Research Poster Session allowing midshipmen the opportunity to share their research and scholarly pursuits with the Naval Academy community. Last fall, more than 170 midshipmen participated in this Yard-wide event.
Schroeder’s many service activities encompass all aspects of midshipmen life. She was instrumental in the development of the current Integrated Laboratory (IL) curriculum of the chemistry major as well as aiding in the design of the renovated Michelson Hall spaces, which support the IL curriculum. Her recent educational research work focuses on improving learning in Plebe Chemistry and has been disseminated in three Journal of Chemical Education articles. In 2021, Schroeder was awarded the Iota Sigma Pi Centennial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. She has been the faculty representative for the Navy Women’s Swimming and Diving Team for 24 years, and interacting with student-athletes remains one of her most rewarding activities.
“Winning the Service Award means that I’ve contributed to making the Naval Academy a better place by helping midshipmen develop inside and outside the classroom, interacting with colleagues to reach a common goal, and serving others,” said Schroeder.
