This week’s Firstie Friday is Midshipman 1st Class (senior) Andrew Graham from Walnut Creek, California. As a member of the Nvy Rugby, Graham will compete in the Rugby National Championship in Houston tomorrow, May 6th. This is the second time the Men's Rugby Team has ever made it to the national championship. Graham is a general science major and a squad leader in 22nd Company.
With the peak of the rugby season in sight, Graham recounts his favorite memory at the academy with his team. “Every Friday our team watches a highlight video of the prior week's practice. It often is humorous or motivational, but each time we watch, I am humbled by the love the men on this team have for each other,” Graham said. He also described the time he spent in the Middle East on summer training. During a training cruise aboard USS Chinook (PC-9), he made a port visit to Dubai, rented a Land Rover, drove through the sand dunes, and even came upon some wild camels.
Graham can outline multiple motivations he's had during his time at the academy. A huge role model for him is U.S. Marine Major Jason Retter, USMC. “He has taught me that how you do the little things is how you do the big things,” Graham said. His favorite quote comes from Teddy Roosevelt’s speech "Man in the Arena.” Graham responded, “I like it because it speaks to the effort of the person and no matter how beat up you get, you must keep going.”
Graham will commission into the Supply Corps as a restricted line officer in May 2023.
