POSTED ON: Tuesday, April 21, 2026 4:45 PM by Christine Maceo

Six midshipmen attended the CubeSat Developers Workshop at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obsipo, California in April 2026.  This annual conference brings together industry leaders, researchers and students to share knowledge and best practices for technology development at the 1U-3U CubeSat level.  MIDN 1/C Nadia Garcia, Will Hardaway and Mack Williams presented their Capstone Project, the Separation Payload Linking Identical Telecommunications Satellites (SPLITS); SPLITS is a commanded undocking system that separates two 3U CubeSats that launch together, to allow coordinated close-proximity operations.  MIDN Chris Diaz, Nicolas Tenorio, and Andrew White presented SAURON, a 3U CubeSat incorporating the Naval Academy Standard Bus and a 2U payload that includes LEDs and collimators, an active ADCS system and thermal management; SAURON will demonstrate an LED-downlink from LEO to the Hopper Hall Observatory at USNA.
