On April 27, 2026, USNA self-administered the Amateur Radio licensing exam for the first time. A record 44 midshipmen, enlisted sailors, officers and faculty successfully qualified for a HAM Radio license through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).  The academic courses that participated in the exam included Space Power and Communications (Aerospace Engineering) and Electricity and Magnetism (Electrical Engineering), in addition to the USNA Amateur Radio Club W3ADO.  Volunteer examiners from USNA included MIDN 1/C Andrew Alvey and MIDN 2/C Micah Wilson, faculty LCDR Alli Hamel and Professor Connor Smith, and staff John Balano and Christine Maceo.  The exam session was supported by the Anne Arundel Radio Club in Davidsonville, Maryland, who provided 3 additional examiners, training and support in session management, and virtual monitoring throughout the 4-hour exam session.  73
