Sponsored by DoD STEM, the Office of Naval Research and Naval Academy Foundation, Girls Only STEM Day workshops held at the U.S. Naval Academy are designed to introduce middle school girls to a wide range of opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math fields. On Saturday, March 5, about 180 girls from Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia attended the day-long event.
The students interacted with STEM faculty and 44 STEM midshipmen and engaged in hands-on activities in applied science, math, and engineering topics. Small group sessions included modules in DNA gel electrophoresis and DNA extraction, robotics, circuits and morse code, acoustics and sonar, geometry and platonic solids, structures and domes, properties of water, and engineering design. Navy Medicine personnel from Naval Health Clinic Annapolis led sessions in the topic of neuroscience. Midshipmen presented a lunchtime career panel to answer student questions about STEM majors.
