Biofuels Educator Webinar 2022

POSTED ON: Tuesday, April 26, 2022 12:00 AM by Sarah Durkin

On April 26, Dr. Sarah Durkin, USNA STEM Center, presented a virtual educator workshop in collaboration with Dr. Mary Stapleton, Towson Univ Center for STEM Excellence, in the topic of biofuels. The workshop was designed to prepare teachers to engage their students in the Next Generation Science Standards science and engineering practice of Planning and Carrying Out Investigations through a laboratory experiment focused on the use of biotechnology to produce biofuels from renewable biomass.

Forty-two middle and high school teachers from Maryland public schools received a full kit of materials in advance and were invited to participate in the webinar. During the webinar, participants learned the content and real-world applications, carried out the investigation, collected and analyzed data, and explored methodology for implementing an inquiry-based lesson. After attending the workshop, participants will receive a full classroom set of materials to implement the lesson at their schools. This project was supported by funding from DoD STEM and the Office of Naval Research.
