Over 300 fifth graders from 21 Anne Arundel County Public Schools, chaperoned by nearly 100 teachers, parents, and AACPS personnel, had the opportunity to showcase their SeaPerch underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) at USNA in early June.
Ninety-nine teams rotated through four stations: the Hydromechanics Laboratory, where teams performed timed maneuvering trials of ROVs in the tank and tested their skills in item retrieval; Flinkers, where they learned about buoyancy; Rockets, where they learned about aerodynamics; and a Makerspace, where they created a machine using hydraulics.
Twenty midshipmen from the Summer Heroes Youth Program (SHYP) summer training group led the activities. STEM Center faculty and staff, interns, and ONR Reservists, made the day possible. Many thanks to the staff in the Hydromechanics Laboratory for their time and the use of their spaces. Summer Heroes Youth Program is sponsored by the Naval Academy Foundation with generous support from Exelon Corporation and Dr. Ernst Volgenau.
