Summer Heroes Youth Program 2022

POSTED ON: Friday, June 24, 2022 12:00 AM by Sarah Durkin

In June 2022, twenty midshipmen mentored over 3,000 middle school students in the local region as part of Summer Heroes Youth Program (SHYP). Midshipmen engaged students with hands-on project in a range of STEM topic areas, conducting 150 classroom visits at 9 public schools with underserved populations in Baltimore, MD, Washington, D.C., Prince Georges' and Anne Arundel County, as well as military-connected students at Quantico Middle High School in Quantico, VA.

Student participants developed problem-solving and critical thinking skills as they completed challenges in science and engineering and participated in sessions on a variety of subjects including biotechnology, bioengineering, engineering design, applied math, flight principles, chemistry, mechanics, electricity and circuits, and physics. The aim of the program is to promote positive attributes of perseverance, self-esteem, and confidence while exposing students to STEM career possibilities and real-world applications. During the course of this summer training program, midshipmen gain professional development experience in leadership, adaptability and communication.

Summer Heroes Youth Program is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, DoD STEM, and the Naval Academy Foundation with generous support from Exelon Corporation and Dr. Ernst Volgenau.
