Girls Only STEM Day workshops held at the U.S. Naval Academy are designed to introduce middle school girls to a wide range of opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math fields. On Saturday, October 15, over 200 girls attended the day-long event. School groups participated from Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York City.
The students interacted with STEM faculty, Navy Medicine corpsmen, and 67 STEM midshipmen and engaged in hands-on activities in applied science, math, and engineering topics. Small group sessions included modules in biotechnology, anatomy and bioengineering, machine learning, electrical etching, fibonacci sequence and applied math, structural engineering, hydraulics, motors and turbines, and rockets. Midshipmen presented a lunchtime career panel to answer student questions about STEM majors.
The USNA Girls Only STEM program is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, DoD STEM, and Naval Academy Foundation with special thanks to Northrop Grumman and Dr. Ernst Volgenau.
