On Friday, November 4, 2022, the U.S. Naval Academy STEM Center hosted its annual Faculty and Staff Family STEM Night. More than 80 adults and 100 children attended the event hosted in Luce Hall. Twenty-three midshipmen managed six learning stations where children could explore science and engineering concepts with hands-on activities in Electrochemistry, Space Technology, Structures, Materials, Puzzles, and Flight. Stations included building and launching straw rockets, solving cipher puzzles, pushing a wooden skewer through a balloon without popping it, making a sextant, etching a dog-tag, and exploring different shapes for structural stability.
LCDR Kai Seglem from the Mathematics Department presented two shows at the Luce Hall Planetarium. Attendees also had the opportunity to view the moon and Jupiter through a telescope provided by Professor Jeffrey Larsen of the Physics Department.
The goal of engaging children in STEM concepts through hands-on activities was evident from the positive feedback from the adults and excitement from the children. The STEM Center staff and Midshipmen appreciated the enthusiasm from all of the attendees.
