The "Best Practices in STEM Outreach" DoD Workshop was held at USNA on November 29, 2022. Thirty-four participants attended from various commands, including representatives from DoD STEM, Space Command, Ellsworth Air Force Base Force Support Squadron (FSS), Air Force Sustainment Center (AFSC), Fleet Readiness Center (FRC), Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC), Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), naval and Marine Corps Public Health Center, Naval Warfare Information Center (NIWC), and more.
Designed for newcomers to STEM outreach and to enhance current programs at DoD commands, this workshop presented best practices for successful implementation of engaging, DoD-relevant activities and methods to build and sustain STEM communities. Sessions included hands-on activities in topics including biotechnology, circuits, machine learning, hydraulics, engineering design, buoyancy, electrochemistry, acoustics, space technology, and flight. Participants gained practical, take-away materials including ready-to-use activities and supplies to support their own command STEM outreach efforts. USNA STEM Center programs are sponsored by DoD STEM, the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Naval Academy Foundation.
