Light snow likely Saturday night and Sunday (11 JAN 2019)

POSTED ON: Friday, January 11, 2019 2:06 PM by Meteorologist A.R. Davies

A strong surface area of high pressure has settled in overhead with a seasonably cool air mass. A disorganized weather system will approach the region this weekend with accumulating snow likely. Southerly flow out ahead of the approaching system will override the wedge of cold air at the surface beginning Saturday afternoon. The associated lift will combine with an upper air piece of energy and result in a period of light (or periodically moderate) snow Saturday evening through Sunday morning. Expect snow to begin falling in Annapolis late afternoon or early evening on Saturday with 1.0 to 3.0” of snow likely by early morning. Meanwhile, the approaching storm will transfer energy to a developing coastal low along the Virginia/Carolina coast. The system will likely be weak and disorganized initially, and may not fully develop until it is further offshore. Furthermore, the strong area of high pressure to our north will likely suppress the northern extent of precipitation associated with the coastal storm on Sunday. Therefore only another inch or so of snowfall is possible in Annapolis through midafternoon on Sunday, depending on the track and development of the coastal storm. Locations south of Annapolis are more likely to be impacted by the coastal storm while locations north of Annapolis likely will see little impacts.

Overall, 2.0-4.0” of snow is likely in Annapolis with a 30% chance of < 2.0” and a 10% chance the coastal storm strengths quickly resulting in > 4.0”. The ground and surface temperatures will support accumulation on untreated roads and sidewalks. Regional snowfall forecast below with high resolution available here.
