Network Account Passwords - Background
The USNA Mission network is a Windows Active Directory (AD) Directory Services Domain that currently uses password authentication to confirm user identity (PKI authentication using a CAC is optional but not yet widely used at USNA). A “network password” allows login to a network account and access to AD services.
Google Apps for Government, the Blackboard Learning Management System, and shared network file storage are also accessible from a network login if these additional information technology (IT) services were authorized.
Accounts for IT services that do not authenticate using AD require a separate login. Changing a network password does not change the password for these other IT services.
DoD requires passwords to be changed no less frequently than every 60 days, and passwords must meet DoD-specified complexity requirements.
