The Hurricane Problem


This animation is the result of solving an initial-boundary value problem for a partial differential equation known as the non-divergent barotropic vorticity equation. The stream function, whose contours are displayed at various time intervals, represents the location of a disturbance (a hurricane) in a rectangular basin (ocean) where the force of coriolis and the nonlinearity due to the convective derivatives are taken into account. Please see the Adam Mathematica program that was used to obtain the approximate stream function.
