Research Interests

Synthesis and characterization studies of mono and disubstituted isocyanide complexes of iron and ruthenium are being conducted by Professor Shade under both thermal and photochemical conditions. The identity of incoming Lewis bases such as phosphine or phosphite ligands, solvent identity, reaction temperature and wavelength of the photolysis lamp are all under investigation as variables which affect the identity and ratio of reaction products. Through collaborative efforts with colleagues in England and Idaho, frozen matrix isolation studies are being conducted at 12K to investigate the cyano-isocyanide intermediates generated in these reactions. In a separate project, the incorporation of resolved prophos ligand into cyclopentadienyl iron and ruthenium complexes is under study with an emphasis on the characterization of the diastereomeric products. Other projects underway in Professor Shade's laboratory and research collaborations involve 1) the synthesis and structural characterization of ditertiary phosphine derivatives of tetracarbonyldi-n5-cyclopentadienyliron and ruthenium; 2) the generation of metal radicals as intermediates in organometallic synthesis; 3) the syntheses and photochemical rearrangements of ring coupled bimetallic compounds; and 4) the syntheses and characterization of bidentate complexes of iron and ruthenium via photochemical Reimer-Tieman reactions.
