USNA Class of 1977 Gettysburg Leadership Encounter
The Gettysburg Leadership Encounter is sponsored by the USNA Class of 1977 and the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA). In June, the Center for Experiential Leadership Development (ELD) conducts a two-day Gettysburg Leadership Encounter (GLE) in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for both Fall midshipmen commanders and team captains.
In December, GLE is a one-day event for the incoming spring semester midshipmen commanders. GLE is set against the backdrop of one of the most significant military engagements in our nation’s history to facilitate an impressive experience for incoming varsity team captains and midshipmen commanders to convey meaning and purpose, as they lead peers and teams at USNA.
During the academic year and competitive seasons, ELD facilitates leader development through team captain and brigade commander seminars and reflection on the unique challenges presented and the opportunities these leaders provide to the Brigade of Midshipmen.
"GLE was packed with many opportunities to hear from highly respected military leaders and all of the conversations that took place provided each of us with tangible leadership concepts to reflect on. Beyond that, it was so special to see all of the midshipmen unit leaders and team captains in one space." ~ Kellen Bynes, Brigade Commander
"The GLE was an immersive and transformative experience that challenged my preconceived notions of leadership and how I approach it. Both years I attended, I walked away with new insights and a deeper appreciation for what it means to lead. One of the most impactful parts of the experience was learning from Colonel Douds—a retired Marine Corps Colonel and Gettysburg Battlefield guide. He made us feel like we were witnessing the events firsthand, and the leadership lessons we learned are timeless. Equally powerful was the opportunity to connect with fellow team captains and brigade leaders in a setting outside the Naval Academy. Being in that environment allowed us to get to know one another on a deeper level. We not only discussed the leadership challenges ahead, but also forged lasting friendships and a close-knit sense of camaraderie that will carry us through the year." ~ Maren Louridas, Captain of Captains & Women’s Basketball Captain
