Experimentation

The SURF is operated by faculty and staff of the Department of Weapons, Robotics, and Control Engineering and is configured to support the needs of the Naval Academy including

  • Course support
  • Capstone project support
  • Independent research, honors research, and Trident/Bowman project support
  • Faculty and Sponsored research support

Usage of the facility is governed by the SURF Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Please refer to the SOP for an overview of the facility, use rules and guidelines, training requirements, priority of access, and hours of operation.

The SURF Experiment Planning and Preparation Form must be completed before the facility can be reserved. Please coordinate with your course instructor, research advisor, and/or research sponsor, as applicable, to complete this form. SURF faculty and staff members are always available to assist you with any questions. When submitting the completed form to the SURF Lab Director, Assoc. Prof. Levi DeVries devries@usna.edu, please schedule a consultation to discuss your plan/proposal and arrange/complete any necessary training.  A reviewed/approved form is required before starting any experimentation and need only be completed once per project.
