EC456 Wireless Networks (2-2-3): An introductory course in wireless networking and wireless network security. Major topics will include the wireless channel; the IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) standard, and wireless security. Additional topics (time permitting) may include Bluetooth, wireless sensor networks, and other advanced topics.

Pre-requisites

EC356 Computer Networks with Security Applications or IC322 Computer Networks

Course Objectives

  1. Discuss the wireless application space and compare and contrast various wireless technologies
  2. Describe, model, and mitigate fading effects in the wireless channel.
  3. Understand and utilize common error detection and correction schemes applied to the wireless channel.
  4. Navigate the IEEE 802.11 standard, explain the architecture and services it provides, and demonstrate “hands on” experience with it.
  5. Explain and analyze the medium access and physical layer techniques provided in the IEEE 802.11 Standard.
  6. Explain common cryptographic and network security concepts applied to the wireless channel.
  7. Describe the security provided in IEEE 802.11, know the associated vulnerabilities, and demonstrate “hands on” experience with it.
