EE475 Laser Fundamentals

Catalog Data & Credits (Recitation-Lab-Total)

EE475 Laser Fundamentals (3-0-3): Basics of laser development and operation will be discussed, to include the wave and particle nature of light, coherence and polarization, elementary quantum mechanics, conditions for producing a laser, laser beam propagation and beam development through a vacuum as well as discussions of the effects of atmospheric turbulence. Additional topics could include ocean optics, Fourier optics, free-space optical (FSO) communications, holography, specific laser systems, atmospheric characterization, and non-linear optical effects.

Pre-requisites

SP212 Phyics II or permission of instructor

Course Objectives

  1. Demonstrate a conceptual, and practical understanding of the fundamental components of a laser as well as the theoretical underpinnings of laser operation.
  2. Develop a practical perspective on the use of emerging laser technologies and systems and their application in everyday use.
