Arabic Major
The Arabic major allows midshipmen to attain proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic and to become familiar with many aspects of Arabic culture and major current issues in Arab societies. Furthermore, they will begin to develop an understanding of the complex linguistic situation in the Arab World (Diglossia). The reality of the Arabic language in which Modern Standard Arabic is used in formal and written communications while spoken natively by none, and that the colloquial, regional dialects of Arabic are what is used by Arabic speakers in their daily lives. Students will emerge from the program with the ability to use the language in a variety of communicative situations, and develop multicultural awareness, and a nuanced understanding of the relationship of the Arab world to the United States and other partners of exchange in the world today.
The Arabic major consists of 10 Arabic language and culture courses [30 credits] taught in Arabic, and 4 major elective courses [12 credits] taught in English. Semester Study Abroad is a requirement for Arabic Majors. Students are encouraged to apply for
Arabic Courses:
The Arabic Language course sequence is required up through Arabic 302. Beyond that, Midshipmen need two additional Arabic Courses at the 300-level and two Arabic courses at the 400-level.
Major Electives:
Midshipmen must complete four Major Electives (12 credits) of their choosing in order to fulfill the requirements of the Arabic Major curriculum. Valid major electives are those courses which relate to the Middle East, Islam, and the Arabic Language and Culture. These courses should consist of courses from other departments (such as Political Science & History), however, midshipmen can choose to take additional 300/400 level Arabic language courses to fulfill two of these major electives.
Further information about each course in the matrix can be found on the Course Descriptions page.
