Semester Study Abroad

The Semester Study Abroad program is an integral part of the Arabic program which empowers students to use their linguistic and cultural skills in the real world. During a Semester Abroad, students are able to truly experience the region and culture which they have studied, as well as improve their Arabic abilities at a rate unparalleled back at the Naval Academy. Since the Middle East and North Africa have experienced so much change in recent years, the locations for the Semester Study Abroad program are constantly changing and an updated list can be obtained by contacting the International Programs Office. In the past, students have been able to participate in a Semester Study abroad within Morocco, Oman, Jordan, Israel, Qatar, and Egypt.

Studying Arabic abroad through a Semester Study Abroad opportunity allows students to immerse themselves in the language and its culture, refine their previous knowledge, and acquire tremendous first-hand experience of the beauty and the diversity of a new people and region.

General Information

  • Semester Study Abroad is a central piece of the Arabic program.
  • During the Semester Abroad, Midshipmen will take at least five courses (15 credits) in either an institution of higher education (foreign university) or Language Center.
  • Midshipmen will work with the overseas program to determine the Arabic language course that matches their level.
  • It is recommended to select 6 or 7 courses and to get approval for them prior to departure in order to account for any on-site changes to the schedule.
  • Courses that duplicate courses that were already taken at USNA will not qualify for credit, however, those which closely resemble Naval Academy courses not yet taken are most likely to be approved.
  • Travel Instructors will be provided by Miss Julia Beth from the International Program Office (IPO).
