Dr. Michael Good is Robert T. Herres Distinguished Military Professor of Ethics at the United States Naval Academy.
A 2000 graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder, Professor Good holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Maryland as well as a Master of Arts in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics from Biola University (Magna Cum Laude).
Dr. Good’s primary area of research is moral development, moral education, and practical knowledge in the military context. He is author of “Tempering Corruption” in Military Virtues, a short reflection on the “Fat Leonard” scandal.
A retired Surface Warfare Officer, Dr. Good received his commission through Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp. (ROTC), University of Colorado in 2000. His operational assignments include multiple Western Pacific and Middle Eastern deployments during tours in USS PAUL F FOSTER (DD 964), USS LABOON (DDG 58), and USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53). He is a 2009 recipient of the Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award in the Department Head category, an award given to outstanding leaders nominated by their peers and subordinates.
Shore Assignments include Surface-Strike Section Head on CNO’s Staff, Surface Warfare Directorate (N86/96), Officer Instructor and Assistant Professor of Naval Science at the University of Southern California, Naval ROTC Unit, and as Permanent Military Instructor for leadership and ethics at United States Naval Academy.
He enjoys spending time honing his culinary technique or immersed in home improvement projects.
