Michael Good is the Robert T. Herres Distinguished Military Professor of Ethics at the United States Naval Academy. 

A 2000 graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder, Professor Good holds a Master of Arts in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics from Biola University (2007), and will conduct a defense for a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Maryland. 

A retired Surface Warfare Officer, Professor Good received his commission through Navy Reserve Officer Training Corp., University of Colorado in 2000.  His operational assignments include multiple Western Pacific and Middle Eastern deployments during tours in USS PAUL F FOSTER (DD 964), USS LABOON (DDG 58), and USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53).

Shore Assignments include Surface-Strike Section Head on CNO’s Staff, Surface Warfare Directorate (N86/96), Officer Instructor and Assistant Professor of Naval Science at the University of Southern California, Naval ROTC Unit, and as Permanent Military Instructor for leadership and ethics at the United States Naval Academy.

He is a 2009 recipient of the Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award in the Department Head category, an award given to outstanding leaders selected (and nominated) by their peers and subordinates. 

Professor Good’s primary area of research is moral development, moral education, and practical knowledge in the military context.  He is author of “Tempering Corruption” in Military Virtues, a short reflection on the “Fat Leonard” scandal.
