Dr. Luke Herchenroeder is an Assistant Professor of Social Psychology in the Leadership, Ethics, and Law Department at the United States Naval Academy. His research interests center on applying social psychological frameworks to identify and mitigate behaviors that elevate the risks associated with typical alcohol use. His work specifically focuses on food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; the act of engaging in disordered eating behaviors before, during, or after alcohol consumption to intensify intoxication or offset caloric intake) as well as behaviors such as sports gambling and simultaneous alcohol and marijuana use.

As an educator, Dr. Herchenroeder is dedicated to fostering intrinsic motivation for learning in his students. He believes that developing a genuine interest in course material is essential for deep engagement and meaningful application of knowledge. To support this, he emphasizes student autonomy, encourages peer collaboration, and builds students’ sense of competence by focusing on conceptual understanding. His goal is for students to leave the classroom with a clear appreciation of how psychological concepts apply to their everyday lives, along with the skills needed to thrive both personally and professionally.

Dr. Herchenroeder earned his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Redlands in 2015. He went on to receive an M.S. in Experimental Psychology from William & Mary in 2021 and completed his Ph.D. in Applied Social Psychology at George Washington University in 2025.
