Commander Matthew Krauz is a native of Long Island, New York. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English from the U.S. Naval Academy, a Master of Science degree in leadership education and human resource development from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Master of Science degree in Joint campaign planning and strategy from the National Defense University, a Master of Arts degree in national security studies from the Naval War College, and a PhD in leadership studies from Gonzaga University. He was commissioned in May of 2001 as a Surface Warfare Officer.
Commander Krauz’ operational assignments include USS VINCENNES (CG 54), USS AUSTIN (LPD 4), USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG 93), and USS ANTIETAM (CG 54). He completed five deployments, including operations in the South China Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Yellow Sea. His last operational assignment was as Executive Officer, USS ANTIETAM (CG 54).
Ashore, Commander Krauz served as a Crisis Operational Planner in Future Operations, U.S. Pacific Command where he supported Operations Damayan and Sahayogi Haat. He was the first permanently assigned Wargame Planner and Analyst at U.S. European Command, supporting defense plan development and assessment and aligning Defense Department wargame initiatives.
In July 2024, Commander Krauz assumed his current duties at the U.S. Naval Academy as a Permanent Military Professor in the department of Leadership, Ethics, and Law.
