LT Nicholas Monck is an Assistant Professor of Military Law. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 with a bachelor of arts in political science. In 2014, he received a master of science in communications from Northwestern University, where he graduated at the top of his class. In 2019, LT Monck received his juris doctor from the University of Colorado Law School. He also earned the Graduate Renewable Energy Certificate and the Energy, Environmental, and Natural Resources Law and Policy Certificate. During law school, he served as the President of the Student Bar Association. Additionally, he was published in the Colorado Law Review - Forum and competed on the national mock trial team.
LT Monck commissioned in the United States Navy in August 2019 through the Judge Advocate General's Corps' Student Program. He completed Officer Development School and the Naval Justice School Basic Lawyer Course in 2020. In October 2020, LT Monck reported to RLSO - Hawaii as a First Tour Judge Advocate. For his Command Services rotation he was assigned to the Fleet Judge Advocate office for Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet. During his first tour he served as a Defense Attorney at Defense Service Office Pacific - Detachment Pearl Harbor where he was selected as the NLSC Junior Officer of the Quarter for FY22 Q1. From 2022-2024, he served as the Staff Judge Advocate for Commander, Submarine Squadron 15 at Naval Base Guam.
In May 2023, he was appointed as the Staff Judge Advocate for Task Force West, the Department of Defense's unified response to Super Typhoon Mawar and was selected as a member of the Joint Region Marianas Crisis Action Team. In this capacity, he also advised the Theater Joint Force Land Component Commander and the Defense Coordinating Element - West staff on a wide range of legal issues, including DSCA, UAS overflights, environmental law, contracts, and tort claims.
Prior to law school, LT Monck was the Press Secretary of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, a Washington DC advocacy non-profit. He has also worked on Capitol Hill and for several federal agencies.
LT Monck currently chairs the American Bar Association (ABA)'s Standing Committee on Armed Forces Law. He previously chaired the Young Lawyers Division (YLD)'s Government, Military, and Public Interest Lawyers committee and was a member of the ABA YLD's Disaster Legal Services Team from 2021-2025. He is a Skipper of Sea Scout Ship 25 in Washington, DC, and previously volunteered with the Guam High School Mock Trial team and the Oahu Search and Rescue Team. He has completed the Chicago, Washington DC, Detroit, and Denver marathons and multiple triathlons.
