Michael J. Sagan attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. Upon graduation, he commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and attended The Basic School graduating with Delta company in December 2017. Second Lieutenant Sagan began flight school training at Naval Air Station Pensacola in 2018, conducting primary training with VT-3 and advanced training with HT-18. He earned his aviator wings in November 2019.
After winging, First Lieutenant Sagan reported to Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 302 at Marine Corps Air Station New River for initial training in the CH-53E Super Stallion. In June 2020, he joined Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462 (HMH-462) at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California. First Lieutenant Sagan served as a daily Schedule Writer within the Operations Department through Service Level Training Exercise (SLTE) 1-21. He then served as the Current Operations Officer and weekly schedule writer on Unit Deployment Program (UDP) 21.2 from May 2021 until November 2021. While on UDP he promoted to the rank of Captain in August 2021.
Upon return from deployment, Captain Sagan took charge of the Flightline maintenance division as their Officer in Charge (OIC). He served in this role from March 2022 until April 2023. During this year in the squadron, Captain Sagan earned his designation as an Aircraft Commander, Section Lead, Division Lead, Night System Instructor, and Aerial Refueling Instructor. He also went on a detachment in summer of 2022 to participate shipboard in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC).
In April of 2023 Captain Sagan returned to the Operations Department as the Future Operations Officer and deployed on UDP 23.2. This included deployment of five CH-53Es to the Philippines and training with their military as part of exercise MASA 2023. In September of 2023 Captain Sagan attended Weapon and Tactics Instructor Course 1-24 in Yuma, Arizona. Upon completion of the course, he served as the Pilot Training Officer for HMH-462 from November 2023 until June of 2024. In July and August of 2024, Captain Sagan transitioned to the Assistant Operations Officer (AOPSO) role and led the squadron through SLTE 5-24 in Twenty-Nine Palms, California. He continued to serve HMH-462 as their AOPSO until April 2025.
Captain Sagan joined the Naval Academy staff in summer of 2025 and served as the Commandant's Staff Director for one year. He was promoted to his current rank of major in October of 2025, and transferred to the leadership department in summer of 2026 where he now teaches plebe leadership, NL110. Major Sagan also serves as the Offshore Sailing Team officer representative and coordinates the semi-annual USMC aviation displays around the yard.
