LT Sawey reported to the United States Naval Academy in June 2023 and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Military Law. 

LT Sawey graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014 with a bachelor of arts degree in history, magna cum laude.  He received his juris doctor degree from Penn State Law in 2018, cum laude.  While attending law school, LT Sawey completed externships with The Hon. D. Brooks Smith, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, as well as the Penn State Law Veterans and Servicemembers Legal Clinic.  LT Sawey also served as the Managing Editor of Articles for the Penn State Journal of Law and International Affairs.  LT Sawey was inducted into Penn State Law’s Woolsack Honor Society in Spring 2018.  LT Sawey is licensed to practice law by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

After receiving his commission via the Navy JAG Corps’ Student Program, LT Sawey completed Officer Development School in September 2018 and graduated with honors from the Naval Justice School’s Basic Lawyer Course in December 2018.  From December 2018 to June 2021 LT Sawey completed his initial tour as a judge advocate at Region Legal Service Office Western Pacific in Yokosuka, Japan.  During this tour LT Sawey also completed a six-month temporary duty assignment as the Staff Judge Advocate for Commander, Amphibious Squadron ELEVEN in Sasebo, Japan. 

From June 2021 to June 2023 LT Sawey served as the first Staff Judge Advocate for Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group / Pacific in Norfolk, Virginia.  During this tour LT Sawey served as the primary legal advisor and ethics counselor for the first flag officer in the administrative chain of command for the Navy’s Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force.  LT Sawey was also the first judge advocate in the chain of command for two maritime patrol and reconnaissance wings, a fleet replacement squadron, and a weapons school, totaling approximately 6,500 Sailors.

LT Sawey’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards).
